Class of 2014 Admission Update: Ivy League & More

Many highly competitive colleges and universities accepted a smaller percentage of applicants to the Class of 1014.

Harvard, Penn, Brown, Cornell, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Northwestern and Duke, all reported their lowest acceptance rates ever.

The Ivy League schools, with the exception of Yale University (which received 134 fewer applications than last year), saw a significant increase in the number of applications.

Harvard received more than 30,000 applications, an all time record.  A record-low 6.9% of applicants were accepted to the Harvard College Class of 2014.   Harvard did not disclose the size of its wait list, which is thought to be substantial.

MIT reported a 6.2% increase in applications.  MIT admitted 9.7% of 16,632 applicants. Last year MIT admitted 11%.

Brown University admitted 9.3% making this the most selective year in the school’s history.  Brown received a record 30,136 undergraduate applications this year, the most in its history and an increase of 21% from last year.  2,804 applicants were offered admission to Brown.

Princeton admitted a record-low 8.18% of 26,247 applicants.  Only 2,148 were offerred admission to the Class of 2014.  Applications to Princeton were up 19.5% from last year. More than 13,500 of the applicants had combined SAT scores of 2100 or higher.

Penn's overall acceptance rate of 14.2% is well below last year’s 17.1% acceptance rate.  Penn received 26,938 applications in total and accepted 3,830.   The target enrollment across all four undergraduate schools at Penn is 2,420 students.

Duke University offered admission this year to 3,972, or 15% of applicants, down from 18% last year.

Stanford University admitted 2,300 or 7.2%

Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, admitted 18% of a record 36,337 applicants.

The University of Chicago offered admission to 3,560, or 18% of 19,370 applicants. 27% of applicants were admitted to the Class of 2013.

Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire received 18,778 applications for the Class of 2014 and admitted 11.5%.

Columbia College, combined with the School of Engineering and Applied Science, accepted  9.16% of overall applicants for the Class of 2014.  According to the Columbia Spectator, "The College accepted 8.3% of its applicants, down from 8.92% last year. SEAS accepted 13.36% to the Class of 2014, down from 14.42% last year and 17.6% the year before."

Northwestern University in Illinois, accepted 23% of applicants well below the 27% accepted last year.

Swarthmore reported an 8% increase in applications and an acceptance rate of 16%.

Since enrollment yields are hard to predict, and there is significant overlap of students applying to top colleges, waits lists are thought to be especially large.
